You can help us drive the law reforms that those most marginalised in our community urgently need to break cycles of poverty by making a gift that’s meaningful to you.

As frontline workers, our team witnesses the devastating impacts people charged with minor offences too often face, whether that be their ability to access employment or secure safe housing.

Today, through our tireless advocacy with allies, hundreds of thousands of Victorians who would otherwise have criminal records are now able to access employment and rebuild their lives with a clean slate.

With your generous support, we can continue to drive the life-changing law reforms like this that our clients urgently need. Donate today.

Thuy attended Fitzroy Legal Service for help regarding her criminal record. She had convictions for two accounts of shop theft, both of which she had committed while experiencing financial hardship as a single parent.

One offence was for stealing food, and the other for stealing a pregnancy test.

At the time of her sentence, Thuy had admitted guilt, expressed remorse and made a statement that she was under significant financial pressure at the time as she saved to cover her children’s dental bills.

Years later and Thuy’s criminal record from these accounts was preventing her from securing work and she was struggling to support her children without it.

Thanks to the legislative changes that Fitzroy Legal Service and our partners fought for, people like Thuy will no longer have ongoing criminal records for minor offences like this. They will now be automatically removed following a designated period.

Help us to drive the law reforms that those most marginalised in our community urgently need to break cycles of poverty and create a more fair and just society for all. Donate today!

Right now – until 12pm Thursday 30 November, EthicalJobs.com.au will match your donation dollar for dollar, up to $9,000. This will provide $18,000 in vital funds at a time our clients and service need it most.

On behalf of all of us at Fitzroy Legal Service, thank you in advance for your support to stand-up for a fair and just society.
